What are the ways to split an expense?

Last updated

In the expense, tap Split and choose how:

  • Equally: choose who shares it, and everyone picked owes the same.
  • Exact amounts: type what each person owes. Evensies shows what is left to assign until it adds up.
  • Percentages: give each person a percentage. They must add up to 100%.
  • Shares: whole numbers, like 2 and 1 for someone who had twice as much.
  • Adjustments: charge someone an extra amount on top, and split the rest equally. For someone who pays less, tap − on the bar above the keypad and type how much less.
  • By item: a line for each item, each shared by the people who had it, with tax and tip shared out.

With By item, tap Add a line for each item and pick who shares it. A line below zero is a discount, taken off equally for the people ticked on it: tap − on the bar above the keypad to make one. Type the Tax and Tip once, and choose Tax & tip by share, in proportion to what each person's lines come to, or Tax & tip equally. When receipt scanning is on, or on an iPhone with Apple Intelligence on, running iOS 27 or later, scanning the receipt fills the lines in for you to check.

If several people paid, set Paid by to Several and type what each paid.

A group can set how its new expenses start out split, for everyone in it; see A group's default split.

Amounts are kept in each currency's smallest unit, such as cents. When a total can't be divided evenly, the remainder goes to people by a fixed rule, so the split always adds up to the total exactly.
