How Evensies makes money

Downloading Evensies, joining a group and everything you do inside one are free. Creating your own groups is one purchase, Create groups, paid once, and it covers every group your account creates. That purchase is the only money Evensies makes.

There are no ads and no subscription, and we never sell your data or share it for advertising. There is no tracking: no advertising identifier, and nothing about what you do in other apps or websites.

From version 1.0.1, the app sends anonymous usage data and crash reports, never your groups, names or amounts, so we can see what to fix. Turn it off in Account with Share anonymous usage data.

Where your data lives

Your account, your groups and the history of every change to them are kept in Cloudflare's D1 database. Receipts are kept in Cloudflare's R2 file storage. Both are in Cloudflare's eastern North America region.

Our server runs on Cloudflare's network, so your phone is answered from a Cloudflare data center near you. Each group also has a small coordinator at Cloudflare that keeps the order of its changes and which account made each one, never their content; Cloudflare places it near where the group was first used (Cloudflare describes it here).

On an iPhone with Apple Intelligence on, running iOS 27 or later, Scan a receipt reads the receipt on the phone itself, with the phone's text recognition and Apple's on-device model, so a receipt the phone reads is not sent anywhere to be read.

Each member's phone also keeps a copy of the groups they are in, so the app works without a connection. The privacy policy names the other companies that handle some of your data, and what for.

What is kept, and for how long

The privacy policy's table lists everything we store about you: what, where, why and for how long. When what the app stores changes, the table changes with it, and so does the date at the top of the policy.

Backups

Cloudflare keeps a running history of our database, which can put it back as it was at any minute in the last 7 days. It is always on, so nobody has to remember to make a backup. Cloudflare describes it here.

Receipts are kept by R2, which stores several copies of each file across data centers in its region. Cloudflare describes it here. We keep no second copy of receipts anywhere else.

Getting the sums right

Amounts are kept as whole numbers of each currency's smallest unit, such as cents, never as decimals that can drift. When a total cannot be divided evenly, what is left over is handed out by a fixed rule, so every split adds up to the total exactly.

Simplify debts changes who pays whom, never how much anyone owes or is owed overall. An expense in another currency keeps the exchange rate it was added with, so a later change in rates never rewrites it.

Automated tests check these rules.

Taking your data, and leaving

Export everything as CSV in Account gives you the expenses and payments of every group you are in, in one file a spreadsheet opens. Export this group as CSV in a group's settings gives you one group.

Delete account in Account deletes your account at once, in the app: no email to send and no waiting period. What you added to groups stays with them, so everyone else's balances still add up. The privacy policy says exactly what is deleted and what stays.

If Evensies ever stops

If we ever decide to stop running Evensies, we will email every account at least 90 days before the server is turned off. Everything keeps working until then, and Export everything as CSV keeps working the whole time, so everyone can keep a copy of their groups' expenses and payments.
